Walking the labyrinth at a holistic arts fair

Walkable Temporary Labyrinths

Labyrinths are an ancient geometric form used for over 5,000 years as a "moving meditation." People report they find it relaxing, centering, mystical and, in some cases, healing.

This photo at right below shows a temporary labyrinth established at the recent City Park Holistic Arts Fair in Fort Collins. This was the third year in a row that Stephen Johnson was invited to build a labyrinth for use by the fairgoers.

The labyrinth is made of flagging tape pinned to the ground with fence post staples. This allows the "lines" to be easily followed by those walking it. Overall, the labyrinth was 60 feet in diameter. Although the labyrinth has been walked by hundreds of people, there have been no reports of turf damage in the three years of the using the Fort Collins City Park.

The photo below left shows a similar temporary labyrinth constructed at the 2004 Grand Junction (Colorado) holistic health festival.

For additional details on constructing such a walkable labyrinth,
contact Stephen Johnson by email at clearheart@frii.com or by phone
at 970-988-5302. Stephen also creates ceramic finger labyrinths in
three styles (classic, Hopi and the new Starseed variety). These can
be seen and purchased online at www.coloradoonlineart.com.
